52 Weeks Project: Week Eight – Blur

Posted on April 29, 2011

This week’s theme, BLUR, was quite a challenge for me because blur is usually the #1 thing I try to avoid in my photos.  Scroll down on this blog or check out the gallery and you’ll see that I definitely prefer sharp photos with the subject perfectly in focus.  I admire other photographers who create beautiful images by experimenting with blur and focus, but it’s just not my style.  I like the idea of forever freezing a split second of time in one crisp, clean photo.

But every so often, it’s fun to play with slow shutter speeds and a blurry Houdini!

We have this beautiful pink Dogwood Tree in the front yard that just started blooming this week.  I loved seeing the petals on the lawn multiply each day and I just had to plant Houdi amongst them for a photo shoot.  He obliged and even gave me a few of his adorable “I just love life so much” smiles.

I’ve been amazed by the quick transition from winter to spring.  It’s like I blinked and a bunch of dandelions popped up in the backyard.  It feels like just yesterday that I was wearing my winter coat and avoiding the outdoors for fear of freezing.  But now that it’s warm and everything is blooming, I’ve traded in my coat for flip flops and I’ve been spending a lot of time admiring the beauty of nature.

Now you can go see the other photographers’ blurry photos, starting with Melissa “Blue” Amrich in Massachusetts.  I’m choosing the theme for next week–what do you think it will be?  Be sure to return on Friday for more of the 52 Weeks Project!
